Ram-ond & Ram-und’s Story

The Bond…

Updated August 9, 2024

The pen was small. The horns were big. We first noticed this when we met two lost rams at a rural country pound.

So big were they, they could be seen from the moon. The irony was that the owner of these magnificent horns, whom we named Ram-ond, could not see past them.

That was until we stepped a little closer into the realm of his gentleness. Adding the words, “It’s okay, buddy,” to the deft movement of our hand, years of encroaching wool growth were pushed aside. For the very first time in a very long time, Ram-ond could see!

The next thing we noticed was his bond with his buddy, Ram-und.

So closely did they move side-by-side that one could believe that beneath those massive fleeces, they were Velcroed together. But we know it is not Velcro that binds them, but something far, far stronger — trust.

Often seen wandering on the outskirts of a state forest, concerns for their well-being continued to build. As did their fleece.

Luckily for them, adept and kind local rangers were able to rein them in.

But we know it is not Velcro that binds them, but something far, far stronger — trust.

Nobody seems to know for how long they had roamed. However, they had become a part of folklore. And if their overgrown and debris-ridden wool is anything to go by, some years would be the perfect answer.

Speaking of perfect, that is the solemn promise we have made to Ram-ond and Ram-und about their future lives.

With internal parasites addressed, vitamin cocktails administered and good nutrition combating their emaciated state, we are well on the way to achieving this.

Our last task will soon be completed with a date for the “barber” set. And as that fleece will fall to the floor, so too will the last remnants of their lives devoid of human kindness.

All that will remain are Ram-ond’s signature horns. And that unbreakable bond.

Both are as majestic in sweep as they are undeniable.

While we see this bond as touchingly beautiful, others may find it hauntingly disturbing. It is easy for some to overlook the fact that animals, especially sheep, can form strong emotional bonds. Acknowledging this means accepting their capacity to suffer, and it reminds us of the bond humankind has broken with the animal kingdom.

Yet there is hope; that bond can be repaired. Lovingly woven together with human kindness.
