If you can you provide an animal with a place where they will have the company of their own kind, a place with adequate shelter for all seasons, and a place where they will be valued and cared for in sickness and in health, we’d love to hear from you!

IMPORTANT – Please Note Before You Apply

Have you researched what is involved in bringing a farmed animal into your heart and home? Do you have the means and the ability to cater to their specific needs? Please check out Open Sanctuary’s Animal Guides here for more information.

Other things to note:

We are located in Lancefield, Victoria, Australia. Unless under exceptional circumstances, we cannot rehome animals interstate. Please find for your nearest animal sanctuary here.
We cannot offer short term or foster care.
We cannot adopt to schools, childcare facilities, aged care homes or community groups.
We cannot adopt to properties that use any animals onsite for breeding, food or fibre.

Why We Have an Adoption Program

Since 2003, Edgar’s Mission has rescued and provided sanctuary for thousands of farmed animals in urgent need. In that time we have come to accept that in order to remain viable, we sadly cannot provide every needy soul with a forever home, for this would compromise the high level of care for our current residents, it would subject our small team to unacceptable workloads and negatively impact the land, and it would diminish our ability to advocate on behalf of farmed animals everywhere.

Our adoption program seeks to match the right animal rescues with loving forever homes.

Average Lifespans by Species

Welcoming an animal into your world is a big responsibility and requires commitment for the entire natural lifespan of the animal.

Chicken 7-10 years (note rescued laying hens and birds bred for flesh have greatly reduced life spans due to unnatural breeding and require additional care throughout their lifetime)
Ducks and Geese: 10 plus years
Sheep: 8-15 years (will greatly depend on the start in life they have had)
Goats: 10 -15 years
Pigs: 8- 12 years (factory farmed or commercially bred pigs have shortened lifespans due to terrible conditions they have been subjected to, and unnatural breeding)
Cows: 15 -20 years

The Animals We Adopt

The animals most in need of forever homes are roosters, geese, ducks, pigs, sheep and goats.
We do not currently have any hens, alpacas, cows, donkeys, rabbits or horses for adoption.
Animals who have resided at the sanctuary for years, who have made bonds with others, or have ongoing special needs, shall in their best interests, remain with us.
Animals are generally adopted in pairs or family groups to make their transition to their new home as stress free as possible. We cannot separate best friends.
Animals are health checked, treated for parasites and in the best of health they can be prior to placement.
Due to unknown backgrounds, we may not be able to provide full histories of the animals.

The Adoption Process

Your application will be followed up with a phone call, reference checks and a property inspection.
When we find your perfect match, we will touch base with you to make arrangements to “hook you up.” And we will chauffeur drive your new buddies to you! If we don’t have just who you are looking for at this time, we’ll keep you updated on that score as well.

So we can get to know you better, you’ll be asked a series of questions along with supplying two personal references if you can. A PIC number (Property Identification Code) is required for anyone housing a farmed species or more than a total of 50 farmed bird species.

Do you own the property where the animals will live? If you are renting, you will need to provide written permission from the landlord for the species you are seeking to adopt.

Have you checked with your local council to ensure you are legally permitted to keep the species you wish to adopt on your property?

Do you have a Property Identification Code (PIC)? This is a legal requirement to adopt farmed animals. Less than 50 chickens/ducks/turkeys/geese combined does not require a PIC number. If you don’t have one, it is quick, free and easy to get one (see link below). If required, please confirm your PIC number or advise if you have applied for one below (this is essential).

Please describe the shelter you will be able to provide for them? They must have access to a three‐sided, draught‐free, waterproof, well‐drained shelter or a substantial stand of trees (younger animals will require a shelter).

Please describe your fencing, pasture and land size available for them?

Please note – in the unlikely event of your circumstances changing and you are no longer able to care for your adopted animals, you are advised to contact Edgar’s Mission in the first instance. The animals are to either be returned to Edgar’s Mission, or a suitable Edgar’s Mission approved home, they are not to be passed on to any third party without our consent.

A Final Request

The costs of rescuing, rehabilitating, treating, caring and rehoming our animals are real and ever-growing. For this reason, we request a donation is made to ensure our life saving work for animals continues. Please state the amount you are able to donate to our Animal Rescue Fund.
