Pandora’s Story

Shining in the Darkest Times

Updated December 18, 2024

With the shadow of the abattoir behind her, Pandora ran. Liberated by her will to live and curiosity about the unknown, she ran as if her life depended on it — because it did.

Breathless and uncertain of her destination, she ran some more. But she reasoned it had to be better than the place she had left behind.

At first, her heart pounded, and her hooves ached. As the acrid smell of death and fear left her nostrils, it gave way to the euphoric scent of freedom—of green grass
and sweet hay.

And hope.

But as the days rolled on and fast vehicles zipped past, Pandora realised that life could be overwhelming at times. Water was not always easy to find, storms brewed overhead and a hint of doubt began to echo in her heart.

Freedom, it seemed, came with its own trials. “Why has the world unleashed so many bad things upon me?” Pandora pondered.

And then the people came.

“More bad things,” Pandora thought. And so, she ran once again, until she was caught. Bundled into the back of a vehicle, fear raced through her pounding heart, and the thought of the abattoir filled her head.

Heartache.

But soon the vehicle rolled to a halt, and she noticed it was not the smell of death she encountered. It was the welcome scent of other goats. Of woolly sheep. Of happy pigs.

“What is this place?” Pandora wondered. “This is sanctuary, my love,” Pandora soon heard.

Although still frightened and unsure, these humans seemed so different from all those she had encountered thus far in her short life. Slowly, as the warmth in their voices matched the softness of their touch, Pandora’s fear began to fade. As she let their kindness wash over her, Pandora remembered the shimmering light of hope she once carried inside. She took a deep breath—and there it was again. Deep within her, where it had been all along. Tentatively, it began to guide her to trust these kindly strangers. And for the first time in what felt like forever, Pandora lay down on a bed of golden straw and slept.

Although Pandora is still coming to terms with this new currency called kindness, in those moments when her body relaxes and the tension leaves her, she tells us she will soon be ready to let it in.

Pandora’s courageous journey into the unknown reminds us to remain resilient through the dark times in life. To never forget when things turn dark and we feel there is nowhere to go, we must look inside to find hope. For hope will always be our compass. Seize it, and let it guide you to a better world.

Welcome, dearest one. Welcome, Pandora. You are safe now; you are at Edgar’s Mission.
