Luna, where there is hope…

Updated November 19, 2024

With the passing of her human and then her mumma, things were looking bleak for Luna. But the sight of the frail, days-old little calf huddled, bewildered, under a tree became her saving grace.

Brought to sanctuary, she arrived with the hope that a kinder future lay ahead. However, the road hasn’t been without its challenges.

Jet black and beautiful beyond compare, it was the vulnerability of this wobbly calf that made us fall instantly in love with Luna. Although her eyes sparkled, vivid and bright, they bulged a little too much—silent witnesses to an unseen trauma. A trauma whose origins Luna could not explain, leaving us only to guess—a difficult birth.

On her second day with us, Luna was placed on an intravenous drip at our dedicated veterinary clinic. Multiple injections came her way in a bid to address the swelling in her brain. With sights, sounds and smells so unfamiliar to her, it was because of Luna’s calm nature that she made it through. Such a quiet resilience nudges us to never give up, because hope is always within reach.

Blood samples were taken to determine if Luna had received colostrum from her dear mumma during the first hours of her life. Now, we wait on tenterhooks for the results. If she did not receive the life-sustaining antibodies from that “liquid gold”, Luna may need a blood transfusion to boost her fragile immune system.

And so, we wait.

We named our sweet new friend Luna because her serene beauty mirrors that of the night sky. Just like the moon—and a sweet little black calf—her name shines bright, no matter how dark the night.

Luna stands as a beacon, reminding us that even in the darkest moments, hope springs eternal when good people come together and care.

Please keep Luna in your thoughts and prayers throughout the day. We will keep you updated on her progress.

Namaste.
