The story of Suzuki & Jimny

She gave him everything…

Updated September 3, 2024

Dear Suzuki, an old and gentle sheep, had been bred yet again. Her frail body, worn thin by time and little care, was a shadow of her youthful self. Yet despite all of this, she had put all her energies into the tiny being growing inside her. And as he burst into a world that offered little kindness, Jimny made his first desperate cries.

Suzuki, weakened beyond the ability to move, could not answer them.

Surrendered into our care, we worked around the clock to do what Suzuki so desperately wanted to do—nourish her baby. Gently placing her in a sling, she was finally able to see and nurture him; we trust this brought her a sliver of peace as she slipped from this world in the early hours of the next day.

The strength of the bond between Jimny and his departed mumma was clear as he tenderly snuggled into her side. Her body, in a curved caress, seemed to say she held on as long as she could. If this did not break our hearts, removing him from her side most certainly did. For days, he cried for her. And while we could give him so many wonderful things—from formula to friends—we could not give him the one thing he wanted above all else: his mumma.

In the days and weeks that followed, a small miracle unfolded as dear Jimny found his way back to the world. Perhaps, we wondered, this quiet resilience came from the unity he found in our ever-growing brood of orphaned little lambs. Seeing him now, gambolling about with his woolly wonder buddies, warms our hearts beyond measure. We trust that if there is another plane from which Suzuki can see him, her heart, too, is as full of joy as ours.

And in every leap, bound and baa Jimny makes, we see a mother’s legacy of love.
