Introducing Hyundai

Sometimes it pays to get lost

Updated September 25, 2024

A misstep on their walk whilst exploring a bush trail led Hyundai’s heroes to the wrong place at the right time. Such a serendipitous affair was clearly meant to be, for had it not, the abandoned and struggling little lamb would be no more.

Recognising the lamb’s newborn fragility, they quickly bundled him up. And knowing the urgency of colostrum for survival, they took him into care. Store-purchased powdered colostrum would have to do for the night, and seeing our little friend so healthy today, it’s clear it did its job.

The importance of colostrum, a mother’s first nutrient-dense milk, can never be overstated—something anyone who comes upon a newborn lamb should be aware of. Without this liquid gold, newborns’ immature immune systems become vulnerable to life-threatening infections.

The next day, Hyundai’s carers faced a dilemma: how to make the best decisions for their new charge. Knowing there is far more to raising lambs, especially those who didn’t get the best start in life, than just offering a bottle now and then, they called Edgar’s Mission.

Hours later, we met this sweet little lad with beige-spotted legs. A healthy little lamb was he, one who has grown in strength and in our hearts each day since. It is rare we encounter such a trouble-free lamb—a huge nod to the early, determined efforts by those who found him.

Adding to his uniqueness today, Hyundai sports two teeny, tiny horns. But far from a devil is he; though an independent ram lamb, he has a soft spot for Barina, his bestie. They are often seen grazing together or snuggled into each other as they bask in the warmth of the Spring sunshine.

When we stray from the path we thought we knew, we don’t just find others—we find the best of our humanity.

In caring for Hyundai, we’re reminded of a powerful truth: when we stray from the path we thought we knew, we don’t just find others—we find the best of our humanity. The compassion, care and connection that rose from that unexpected moment saved Hyundai’s life. And in saving those who are at our mercy, perhaps we save a little of ourselves too.

There are many messages of hope in Hyundai’s story. But the one we love most is this: sometimes, it pays to get lost, because you never know just who—or what—you’ll find.
