Please Don’t Leave
Although lovingly tucked snugly into her bed, it was unfamiliar, and as that flick of a switch claimed the day, the little kid shifted uneasily.
Deciphering the bleats that came from just shy of her bed, the Lady in the Hat read its message clearly – “Please don’t leave me.” Hot Lips, as the kid had affectionately been dubbed only hours earlier upon arrival into our care, was not even a week old when she had been found frightened and alone.
And if you can trek your mind back to your younger years, you may recall what a hellish nightmare it was if you found yourself lost and alone in a world far, far bigger than yourself. Whether stranded in a shopping mall or alone at school after everyone had left, all kids, whether human or caprine, fear the unknown. And abandonment.
Bundling the wee one up in loving arms and whispering into her velvety soft ear in a language whose tone transcended species came the words, “All will be well, little one.”
Fulfilling this prophecy, Hot Lips quickly melted in right next to the Lady in the Hat (although she was sans hat at this hour) as she heaved a little sigh, her body softening, and sleep became her. With Jessica Cat rounding out the symmetry on the other side, calm was restored to Pam’s little cabin of kindness.
Ruby, now deaf to the world, slept through the entire ordeal!
There is an embodied knowledge in our hearts that tells us, regardless of form, all babies need to know love, welcome kindness and yearn to feel safe. For vulnerability comes with the territory of infancy. Yet sadly, with the passage of years, many amongst us have moved on from this truth, enabling them to cause hurt and harm without reflection.
But here is where we need to get back to a kinder way of living, loving and viewing the “others” with whom we share the planet. For sentient and sensitive are we all.
Please don’t let this wisdom ever leave your heart.
