We’d love to have a beer with Duncan…
With a nod to Australian Country Music Legend, Slim Dusty, we declare, “We’d love to have a beer with Duncan”. But alas, we cannot.
Not just yet, anyway, for dear Duncan is just too untrusting of our species. From a large flock of Dorper and Damara sheep, Duncan was surrendered into our care due to his lameness. Although, in itself, it is a painful condition, it was not life-threatening and has resolved with diligent treatment. However, without its occurrence, Duncan’s grim fate would have been sealed, and he would most certainly not be enjoying the life he does today.
A life where things happen at his pace and of his choosing. With his head now turning towards us, instead of away, his gaze is keen to meet ours. With some trepidatious steps our way he so softly moves, his generous spirit starting to give way to the possibility we may be okay.
And every now and then, he delights our spirits when he wags his little tail with glee. It takes everything in our power not to scream out the loudest “Wee!!!” in delight, but you can bet our hearts are hearing it! Duncan really is the sweetest of sheep, gentle in nature, and vulnerable by design. And in being so, he reminds us that while we can do anything we wish to animals such as he, when we can choose to be kind, we ignite the best of our humanity.
And perhaps, just perhaps, when we do, dear Duncan might choose to have a beer with us.
