The gift

When Chevvy’s kind humans realised they could no longer provide the young orphan lamb with the care he needed, they made the heartfelt decision to seek help. Living in a remote area, their options were few. And so, with love as their compass, they packed up their cherished friend and made the journey to sanctuary.

Chevvy’s ears told the story of a sun-soaked life, but his bright eyes spoke of something deeper—love had wrapped itself around this little lamb whilst in their care. And it only took a few minutes with this “chin-exploring” chap to feel the depth of that affection. Wiping our face clean, the baton of tender love and care was accepted. Such an easy decision to continue the tradition.

Our first mission though, was to find Chevvy a companion. Yet, we had no lambs of his age in our care. Who we did have, however, was Luna. A gentle young heifer calf, whose coat is as black as midnight, while her future was just as dark prior to finding sanctuary. Arriving just days earlier she was fighting her own battles but radiating a quiet strength on which we have built.

What unfolded next was nothing short of magic. Chevvy snuggled into Luna’s side. As if she had known him forever, Luna began to nuzzle him with a tenderness that would have melted the hardest hearts. From that moment, their bond became unshakable—a humble and profound partnership built on trust.

And presence.

Watching them now, whether nestled in a bed of golden straw or basking in the warmth of the sun’s embrace, it’s impossible not to feel inspired. They embody something so many of us have forgotten: the beauty of the present. They don’t dwell on the struggles of yesterday or worry about what tomorrow may bring as so many of us humans do. For Chevvy and Luna, life is in the here and now.

This is indeed a gift to us all and reminds us why it is called the present.
