Spice Girls’s story

I’ll Tell You What I Really, Really Want

Updated November 5, 2026

Meet the Spice Girls. No, not those Spice Girls!

When a local council contacted us about five ISA Brown hens reportedly dumped as a prank, little did those responsible realise they may have given these girls the greatest reprieve of their lives.

For their bodies told a troubling story.

Once-rich chestnut feathers had faded to brittle, ragged wisps, while on some, great patches of exposed skin marked the places where a beautiful mantle of feathers should have been.

Yet more concerning was what we could not see.

The reproductive strain, the calcium drawn from their bones to fashion eggshell after eggshell and the illnesses that can follow.

Their wild ancestors, the red junglefowl, laid modest clutches of eggs during breeding seasons. Yet today’s commercial hens, through selective breeding, can produce more than 300 annually.

The cost is borne not at the supermarket checkout, but by their bodies.

And for one precious girl, whose frighteningly thin frame suggests something far more sinister may be unfolding within, we hold particular fears.

Under veterinary guidance, the girls will receive hormone implants to suppress egg production, giving their weary bodies a much-needed reprieve.

And as fate would have it, somewhere along the road to sanctuary, the Spice Girls burst from the radio, their unmistakable anthem providing a fitting soundtrack for five newly liberated lives.

And so Posh, Scary, Baby, Sporty and Ginger arrived!

And oh, how quickly their true selves began to emerge.

Scratching enthusiastically in their dust bowl, perching proudly upon railings and stretching their wings to capture the sun’s warming rays, these girls remind us of something wonderfully profound.

We may have taken the chicken out of the jungle, but we can never take the jungle out of the chicken.

For all that has been taken from them, their spirit remains, each a bold, inquisitive individual with a personality no production record could ever capture.

Though they were bred for what their bodies could give, we will cherish them for who they are.

And perhaps that is what these Spice Girls really, really want.

Not another chance to produce, but a chance, at last, to simply be.
