The Fabric of Life
Pop Lin. A most fitting name for a little lamb. For poplin is a fabric known for being soft yet strong. And, as we are discovering, so too is the little lamb who bears its name.
Arriving at Edgar’s Mission just under a week ago, Pop Lin brought with her four tiny hooves, two severely contracted front fetlocks and a zest for life that seemed entirely at odds with what her little legs would allow.
She could not even stand.
But where her tendons refused to budge, our determination to help her proved equally stubborn. And so our world has rearranged itself around Pop Lin.
There are stretches and splints, laser treatments and massages, all woven into the rhythm of our days. There are bottles, too, which Pop Lin approaches with an enthusiasm that suggests she has never met a meal she didn’t love.
And there are nights spent hunkered down in the cabin with the Lady in the Hat, where the smallest of lambs somehow manages to occupy the largest part of the bed. And yes, Miss Jessica still does not approve of lambs in the bed!
But perhaps the loveliest part of Pop Lin’s story is that, little by little, her world is growing.
Having graduated from her tiny wheelchair to splints, she is discovering what those legs of hers were always meant to do. And with her new Pop lamb clan for company, she is now zooming about as though she has a lifetime of adventures to catch up on.
There is still much work ahead, and no certainty about how her story will unfold.
But isn’t that the fabric of life?
Threads of hope and uncertainty, struggle and tenderness, woven together by the hands and hearts of those who care. And sometimes, into that great tapestry comes someone so very small, yet capable of changing its pattern forever.
For the strength of life’s fabric is not found in any one thread, but in the kindness that binds them all together.
