It’s 2.20pm on Saturday 15 March, 2025
“All stations. All stations” my voice crackles over the radio. A sheep is trapped deep in the bog of a once-vibrant river drained by relentless drought. The local SES are calling for our help.
Our rapid response team assembles
I send a quick reply: “We’re on our way.”
When we arrive, Jumbuck is neck-deep in mud. Her eyes, encrusted and cloudy, plead silently for mercy. Around her are deep gouges of despair, failed attempts to escape the mire.
Would she be the unforgiving riverbed’s next victim?
We draw our breath and hatch a plan
A winch is needed, and every ounce of our strength. With the help of the local SES and a serendipitously found piece of discarded carpet, the rescue team wades in. Some shoeless, some losing shoes in the dense, sticky mud, thigh-deep and determined – we press on.
Inch by nail-biting inch, Jumbuck edges closer to shore.
Exhausted, we finally slump, but Jumbuck is now safe
Back at Sanctuary, we wash away the mud, the grit, the fear. Jumbuck is tired but brave. An IV drip rehydrates her weary body. Sweet chaff and oats ease her hunger. Antibiotics guard against infection as ointment soothes her grit grazed eyes.
Night falls, but the Edgar’s Mission team keep working – as we log her notes, brief the overnight team, we whisper softly, “You’re safe now Jumbuck. You’re at Edgar’s Mission. We’ll see you in the morning sweet lady.”
