Saving SsangYong

Updated September 5, 2024

In the soft light of a winter’s afternoon, a wildlife rescuer scanned the horizon for any sign of injured kangaroos. It was in this quiet, desolate landscape that SsangYong was found. Alone and still wet, it was, alas, amniotic fluid that bathed him, not his mumma’s love. Where she had gone was anyone’s guess.

At a hefty 5.4 kilograms, SsangYong arrived at sanctuary. Yet despite this great weight for a newborn, he was still very much a fragile being.

One in desperate need of care, kindness and colostrum.

Having arrived at just the right place to receive all three, SsangYong quickly began to thrive. His days were filled with the warmth of the sun on his back and the bounding joy of his newfound buddies, over whom he towered, Ducati and Buick.

SsangYong quickly grew, with his frame expanding faster than any other lamb at the sanctuary. Despite his size, his heart remained gentle, and his demeanour, friendly and soft. Embodying the role of the gentle giant is he, as SsangYong can often be found keeping watch over the smaller lambs.

As we watch over SsangYong and his crew, a sense of awe and gratitude becomes us. How a newborn lamb was found by chance amidst a search for injured kangaroos—a reminder of how life can offer unexpected gifts and kindness can be found in unlikely places. SsangYong stands, although more than often it is a gambol, as a symbol of the strength found in vulnerability and the grace that comes with kindness.

It isn’t the size of our beginnings that defines us, but the warmth we give and receive along the way that does.

In SsangYong’s journey he teaches us that it isn’t the size of our beginnings that defines us, but the warmth we give and receive along the way that does.
