Risin’ up, back on the street…
Cue Eye of the Tiger as a white Silkie chicken struts down the street. Cars, far, far, larger than he zipping past. Just a rooster and his will to survive.
So many times, it happens too fast, once much-loved fluffy chicks morph into testosterone charged roosters. Often tossed recklessly to the streets, abandoned in parklands or dumped at veterinary clinics for euthanasia, their fates are never good, their human-inflicted plights are ignored, and yet their personalities are glorious.
As they are forgiving.
Face to face with these magical beings, one cannot escape the wonder and curiosity in their eyes. Spend a little more time with them and you will feel the radiation of the joy for living that exudes from their hearts – you will also hear it in their dulcet crows!
How tragic it is that so few of these animals get to fulfill such a life.
Yet rising to the challenge of championing the cause of roosters we shall as we implore of anyone who is remotely considering hatching out chicks, to ask of themselves, “Do I have the capacity and love for the roosters?”
And so it goes, another day another rooster. This time an adorable and affectionate little lad named Rocky Balboa. Yet there are no fly kicks from him. In fact, the only thing that will hit you when you meet him is how endearing he is, how undeserving he was of the dire fate he faced and how our species urgently needs to right the terrible wrong that has been visited upon roosters. For more than 9 times out of 10, their existence is of human design.
Oh, but be warned little Rocky will unreservedly steal your heart!
So let’s hatch a kinder world for roosters. One where justice and compassion is a right and not a privilege for animals. Where we humans are responsible for “who we have tamed”, and above all else where roosters can cross the road without their motives ever being questioned.
And if one is in need any inspiration for doing all of this, they need look no further than into, the eye of the rooster…
