Nina’s story

The Island at the End of the World

Updated June 27, 2026

Whilst we do not know where Nina’s story began, we know where it almost ended.

On a tiny island on the outskirts of Melbourne.

Alone.

Abandoned for reasons that defy both logic and compassion, the little goat had been tied to a stake and left behind. How long she had stood there, watching the water that separated her from the world, we cannot know. But loneliness is a language understood by all social beings, and goats are no exception.

Terrified and with nowhere to go, Nina’s future hung by the thinnest of threads.

Thankfully, kindness spotted her first.

An extraordinary rescue unfolded, led by our friends at Vets for Compassion. Boats, darting equipment, life jackets and a remarkable amount of human ingenuity were all called into service on behalf of one small goat whose life mattered. Even in her sedated state, rescuers remained mindful she might leap from the boat as she was ferried to safety, a reminder that the will to survive is a force not easily extinguished.

After a short stay at the local pound, no one came forward to claim her. But then, perhaps, that is because Nina was never truly lost. She was simply waiting to be found.

Today, Nina rests safely at sanctuary in the company of a much-loved shaggy grey teddy bear and dear Clancy, an affable sheep who has taken it upon himself to reassure her that these strange new humans mean no harm.

We named her Nina, a name that means little girl and a name that is as gentle as the little goat herself. One that fits her perfectly.

Because if Nina’s story teaches us anything, it is this: the measure of our humanity is found not in how we treat those who belong to us, but in how we respond to those who have been forgotten.

And thanks to a great many kind people, Nina has been forgotten no more.
