A goat named Hershey and the art of belonging…
Few things offer us, and other animals, greater happiness in life than our relationships with others. We are seeing this play out with our newest caprine friend, Hershey.
Once a lone goat in a pound, surrounded by barking dogs, it was easy to understand Hershey’s initial apprehension towards our kindness.
However, now ensconced in sanctuary, he is settling in with his new tribe, Purr and Fect – two very outwardly confident sibling goats (on occasion, too outwardly!). From them he is learning the comfort that comes with confidence, of having the courage to set fear aside and move bravely forward to that outstretched hand.
Our promise to him is that we will not let his faith down.
Never grazing too far apart, and feeding off the cues of Purr and Fect, dear Hershey is at last starting to let his guard down. Seeing the results this emotional security and genuine connection provides a poignant reminder of the comfort one finds in the gentle art of belonging.
Whether human or caprine, we thrive best when we become a part of something bigger than ourselves – our tribe.
