Blessing and a Blade—The Story of Grevillea
For most newborn lambs, life is a trial. They enter a world that is as harsh as it is indifferent.
Where bitter winds cut across barren paddocks, where loving mummas are too starved or ill to feed them and where the laws that are meant to protect them whisper that some animals are more equal than others.
Such is the story of Grevillea.
A personable, speckle-nosed little lamb who came into the world on a mid-winter’s day in central Victoria. Her first breaths were taken by her mumma’s side, her next were by the roadside where she had wandered. Why little ones sometimes make such treks, we may never know. But when they do, their lives balance on a knife’s edge.
Fast-moving vehicles may strike them or sometimes the wily fox or even a menacing bird of prey may find them. Though how she came to be there remains uncertain, kindness knew exactly what to do—ferrying Grevillea safely to sanctuary.
Named for the red-flowering shrub whose blossoms brighten winter, Grevillea has lived up to her name. With her woolly friends, Gumnut and Birch, by her side, she has grown strong and sure-footed, with her days now filled with warmth and wonder.
Though now an older lamb, Grevillea has not lost her yearning for human comfort and cuddles. And we are richer for the joy it brings. Each time her speckled nose brushes our hearts or her lamby gambols bring smiles to our faces, Grevillea reminds us of this truth—though life can cut and wound, when kindness steps in, life heals. And then it flourishes—always, always, astonishing us with its beauty.
In Grevillea’s journey, from roadside peril to sanctuary safety, we see proof that we cannot choose the world we are born into. But we can choose the world we create.
And in choosing kindness, we lay down the blade and lift up the blessing.
