Changing the way we see the world…
Ben, in his “snow whiteness,” something reflective of his kind nature, is one of the Sea Lake Silkies. Rescued over 12 months ago from a place most accurately described as hell on earth, Ben has found comfort in his new world. He, too, has found a best friend in Roo.
Roo is a sweet and gentle large red rooster, his backstory we do not know, however his blindness is evident. And together, although different in size, they navigate the world together. Exemplarily.
Ben, always accommodating of his bigger friend, letting him know where he is. And dear Roo, despite his formidable form, he doesn’t have a mean bone in his feathered body.
A gentle tap of Roo’s metal feed bowl elicits delighted clucks, for the dear fellow knows what lies ahead. And we ensure his anticipation is always met.
Seeing the rich emotional worlds of this unlikely twosome really does cause one to change the way they see the world and the animals we share it with. For those unacquainted with chickens, so many are surprised to learn they display empathy, form bonds with some, and hold grudges against others. They can recognise familiar humans, and in Roo’s case, he does this despite his blindness. They have eureka moments, and they give an entirely new meaning to the derogatory expression of “bird brain.”
Not convinced? Please take a moment to spend some time with these unjustly maligned birds; you too will change how you see the world.
