The Beatrix Potter and Jeremy Fisher story

A bond of lambs

Updated September 25, 2024

Though happiness seems to trail wherever little Beatrix Potter roams today, life was once less than kind for him. His frail, two-month-old body screamed of this as he was spotted by a kind passerby. Yet, four simple words spoken by the farmer would change his destiny forever: “You can have ‘im.”

And what a pitiful “‘im” he was. While his spine was as sharp mountain ridge that ran the course of his back, two lonely peaks sat either side towards the rear marking the site of his prominent hip bones. His rear end—encrusted with filth, both liquid and lithe, and writhing tapeworms—all that more than hinted of the parasitic burden that had stolen so much of his life’s vitality.

But destiny took a softer turn when Beatrix arrived at sanctuary. It was here that Beatrix met the gentle Jeremy Fisher: a fellow orphan whose arrival had just preceded his. Though their stories differed in detail, both lambs were bound by the same heartache, and abandoned by the same world.

They understood too well the gnawing hunger of starvation, the silent ache of maternal deprivation, and the fragility of clinging to life with so little to hold onto.

Together, the two lambs formed a bond, kindred spirits in a world that had once forgotten them. This bond warmed their hearts as much as it did ours watching them grow, both inside and out. As spring’s blossoms began to unfurl all around us, so too did their friendship.

Alas, for dear Jeremy, the wounds of starvation ran deeper than they seemed. The damage wrought by neglect and parasites was irreversible, and no amount of care, kindness or Beatrix Potter love could heal them. His passing sent ripples of sorrow through all who had known him.

Even the smallest lives leave the deepest impressions.

Yet Jeremy’s memory endures, etched into the hearts of those who cared for him.

And so, Beatrix Potter continues—living for himself, and for Jeremy—a reminder that in the sanctuary of compassion, even the smallest lives leave the deepest impressions.
