Some things are meant to be…

Updated August 1, 2024

Whether driven by curiosity, divine intervention or perhaps just plain serendipity—whatever the cause, our heroes found themselves on a seldom-travelled road, leading them to an aged ewe in the middle of it.

At first, they mistook the apparently lifeless shape for a dead kangaroo. But to their surprise, the lump quickly morphed into a very much alive, though non-ambulatory, sheep.

With no sign of human life around or any clue of where she might have come from, the bewildered and somewhat dishevelled old gal was tenderly tucked into the back seat of their car. A gentle kiss on her head and the words, “You’re safe now, our lovely,” hinted at the kindness that lay ahead. Though still uncertain of it all, the ewe quizzically surveyed her new surroundings, letting out a soft sigh as she surrendered to whatever may be, as she was driven to sanctuary.

While destiny may be written in the stars, it was the kindness in the hearts of her rescuers that brought her to safety.

While destiny may be written in the stars, it was the kindness in the hearts of her rescuers that brought her to safety. “We simply could not leave her there,” they said. With such a heavenly start to her new life, we named our new ovine friend Aries.

As the heartbeat detected on an ultrasound soon revealed, Aries came bearing special “cargo”. Just days ago, this was manifested in the form of a perfect little black ram lamb.

A petite little babe whom Aries is incredibly protective of. Bearing all the hallmarks of being born at sanctuary, the cheeky Ovis shows no fear of humans, unlike his dear mumma.

Trusting in the smarts of sheep, we know that all too soon, this will change for Aries. Just as her once poor state of health has turned around through good nutrition, judicious medications and kindness, so too will her view of humans, given we shall never give her cause to fear us.

Moving now freely as she does, in a world of her own choices, it appears Aries recognises she is now the author of her own life. How beautiful it is that she will no longer, and her baby never, have to bear the burden of human wants or impositions.

Given the dire fate that awaits most sheep, it is more than heart-warming to know that safety, kindness and a wonderful life ahead have found this sweet mother and child—reminding us that some things are just meant to be.

So closely did they move side-by-side that one could believe that beneath those massive fleeces, they were Velcroed together. But we know it is not Velcro that binds them, but something far, far stronger—it is trust.
