Not that hard
To many, hard rubbish days are troves of treasure for freegans. But on this day, they were in for an extraordinary find as two sweet little ISA Brown hens in a cage caught their eye. And then their heart.
With a sign reading, “Free to good home” this soon became a prophecy, as Alex Layhey and Gretta Lay were sanctuary bound. Displeasure with the many rodents their food had attracted, we learned, was their reason for eviction.
Far from disposable beings are hens such as they. Yet, sadly, we are more often hearing of stories like theirs. Purchased for backyard eggs only to be discarded when the going gets tough. The most common reasons cited are low egg production or troublesome issues with housing, health or feeding.
As anyone who’s spent time with these feathered wonders will attest, they may be small in size, but that is about the only thing about them that is. For their personalities are bigger than Texas, while their needs are more complex than many may think.
With their lives disposable no more, it is easy to understand why these truly sweet, curious and loving hens have quickly found a place in one of our team member’s hearts and their chicken coop. A place where they will never face eviction again.
Knowing these girls as we do, surely it cannot be that hard to recognise that kindness towards animals is a choice we should all make. And anything less is simply rubbish indeed.
