Glory – Finding Her Feet

Updated June 26, 2026

Glory found sanctuary in December 2023, which seems fitting for one found by angels. Though it was not our sanctuary she first found, but that of our good friends John and Debbie at J&D’s Sanctuary.

Somewhere before kindness reached her, something terrible had happened. A traumatic event had torn away the lower parts of both her hind legs, leaving infected wounds, maggots and pain where hooves should have been.

But despite all of that.

Hope remained.

And hope, as it so often does, found good people. John and Debbie offered Glory care, devotion and even a rad set of wheels, though Glory, it must be said, did not think too much of those. But as time passed and her body continued doing its best to adapt, her needs grew more complex.

And so this sweet black Dorper sheep has now touched down at Edgar’s Mission, where specialist care, further diagnostics and perhaps even prosthetics await.

We had been worded up about two things before Glory arrived: the severity of her condition and the sweetness of her soul.

Both, as far apart as they may seem, we have found, are true.

There is something quietly extraordinary about the way nature tries to mend what trauma has taken. At the base of Glory’s stumps, tiny single hooves have formed, as though her body has been trying to write a new ending with what little it had left. X-rays will soon help us understand whether there is enough padding to support her or whether surgical intervention and human-made “hooves” will help her walk more comfortably through this world.

Though once known as Gloria, a small change was needed, for we already have our own dear Gloria here, an ageing white goat with a cheeky toothy grin. And because animals know their names and because beginnings matter, we chose something close enough to honour the past while gently making room for the future.

Gloria became Glory.

And perhaps that is exactly right.

For true glory is not found in conquest, possession or power. It is found in what we do when suffering asks something of us. In the hands that heal, in the hearts that refuse to look away and in the courage of a sheep who, even after all she has lost, is still trying to stand.

And stand, dear Glory, we shall help you do.
