Peanut and Butter—Spreading the Love
As gunshots rang out into the night, terror fell upon the innocent. By morning, not all would survive.
Their mumma did not, yet somehow, two tiny kid goats did. Peanut and Butter. Their beginning speaks to the uncomfortable truth behind the label “feral goats”. Brought to this country by humans, goats were never meant to be here. And yet, through escape and deliberate release, they have been left to survive as best they can.
It is their resilience, agility and adaptable natures that have caught them in a cycle not of their making.
Culls come and go while their numbers rise and fall. But for the individuals trapped within it, the cost is always the same. Until we embrace humane, long-term solutions such as fertility control, the cycle will continue.
And so, when a kind-hearted soul came upon two newborns alone in the aftermath, they were faced with a choice: to walk on, or to care.
Thankfully, for Peanut and Butter, they chose the latter.
Now, their days are filled not with fear, but with bottles, soft bedding, best buddies and the quiet reassurance of safety. They bounce through the world and off people’s backs with a confidence that seems to defy their beginning, just as those leaps defy gravity.
And they live their days as though they have already decided that life is something to be embraced, not feared.
Perhaps that is the gift they carry. And the legacy they leave us with.
Peanut and Butter, though small in size, are generous in spirit. They remind us that even in the most complex of circumstances, kindness still has a place.
And here, at least, their story will not be one of survival alone.
It will be one of the love they spread.
