When Good Fortune Finds You

Updated February 19, 2026

“If this ram belongs to you…” Those were the words that marked the beginning of Blaze’s second chance.

This young, strong and handsome ram was found wandering along a lonely country track, completely unaware of the label placed upon him.

From here, he was taken to the local pound, where he waited and waited, and remained unclaimed.

For weeks he stood behind their wooden rails, his fate hanging not on who he was, but on what he was deemed to be.

In pounds across the country, dogs and cats are photographed, named and passionately advocated for, with their lives rallied behind. But for sheep, goats and pigs, those whose bodies have long been assigned a purpose, they rarely receive the same grace.

We remain deeply grateful for the kind pound workers who do see these individuals for who they are. But the system is not built for them.

Blaze did not know this.

And so he simply greeted each passer-by with his soft eyes and affable curiosity, bagging hearts as he bagged biscuits and treats. And somehow, through that quiet gentleness, good fortune found him.

If Blaze had been born into a different body, with fur instead of fleece or with a collar replacing a tag, would his rescue have been remarkable at all?

A door opened, kindness arrived and sanctuary became his horizon.

But we cannot ignore the harder truth.

If Blaze had been born into a different body, with fur instead of fleece or with a collar replacing a tag, would his rescue have been remarkable at all?

Or simply expected?

Is it right that an individual’s worth is measured by familiarity, tradition or even the purpose we assign to them?

Blaze was indeed lucky. So many are not.

When good fortune finds one, may it stir something in us for the countless others still waiting behind farm gates. Waiting not just for rescue, but for recognition.

Because the only difference between Blaze and the other animals who share our hearts and homes is the story we have chosen to believe.
